Avant-Garde Revisited


Day One.
This introductory session will be dedicated to the revision of the historical Avant-Garde made during the last decade of critical writings. During the class we will analyze the text written in the early 1920s by Roman Jacobson dedicated to Aphasia in its connection to modernist practice of collage and montage. We will then summarise the main topics of Hall Foster's book The Return of The Real (1997) and the article The Success of Modernism by Francesco Manacorda (2003). The second part of class will be dedicated to the reconstruction of the practice of the first modernist institution GINKHUK represented by Dr.Irina Karasik, a leading specialist in Russian Avant-Garde and Contemporary art. The third section of the first day will take place at the studio of Gennady Zubkov who will introduce students to his practice and the Additional Element theory of Kazimir Malevich, Cap and Cupola system of Malevich's student Vladimir Sterligov.


Day two.
The first part of the day will be dedicated to current exhibition practice. During this session we will analyze the theory of nomadic modernism and its realisation at the last Documenta exhibition. The second part of the day will be dedicated to the Modernisation of Modernism. During the third session will be discussed the fate and possible application of Malevich's Additional Element theory today.
 

Day three.
The first session of the day will focus on repressed memory in contemporary art practice. During the second and the third sessions we will an attitude between political and esthetical on the example of the works represented at the last Venice Biennial. During last sessions it will be summarised as well current writings on Avant Guarde revisited.
