SHORT CV BARRUS

Edson Barrus (1961, Carnaubeira du Penha, Brazil). Lives and works in São Paulo and Paris.
Maîtrise d'histoire de l'Art et Languages Visuels, Programme de Póst-diplôme de l'École de Beaux Arts. Université Fédérale de Rio de Janeiro. Curator of the Galerie du Centre d'Arts d'Université Fédérale Fluvial (2001-2002).

As cultural activist founded and directed since February 2002, l'Espace de la Vie Expérimentale Res do Chao (Ground Floor) a non-profit experimental space, inside an apartment in the center of Rio de Janeiro ; coordinator for two years of a group for preparatory studies for the advanced Diploma in the Arts, editor of the magazine Nos Contemporaneos [Our Contemporaries]; Consultant and technical artistic advisor to ArtTrain’ee.

Barrus has also made nearly a 100 films.

For two years he has been working on the Cão Mulato Project which aims at creating a 3-d virtual model of a dog and giving it an existence in virtual reality. The Cão Mulato Project aims at making use of the technology for the artificial simulation of life which allows the use of an algorithmic metaphor for genes to optimise, by means of a particular formula, the process of cross-breeding associating specific genes or a number of different genes with a phenotypal characteristic (the shape of the body, or of the head, eye color, hair texture, etc.). By observing how the crossing of these “genetic operators” as parameters of races determined by the formula, will produce hybrid descendants.
