Emily Newman: The Nanny, the Goat, the Kid and the Kitten

In Emily Newman's The Nanny, the Goat, the Kid and the Kitten, dolls are used to explore the psychic implications of a family's everyday life...
During the period of early language development, the child-hero of the film is raised separately by his Engilsh-speaking mother and his Russian-speaking nanny. This leads the mother to believe that his identity is partitioned. The twenty-minute film depicts the mother imagining the inaccessible parts of her son's mind, entering the areas of his identity that are closed to her. The film is meant to bring therapeutic rewards, as the mother generates an alternative to the separation that bilingual development triggers between her and her child.
The film on view thus represents the mother doll's perception and is contextualized within the fictional space of the dolls. A projected completion of the project involves two more films which will take into greater consideration the perspective of the nanny and of the child (as imagined and mediated by the mother).
The exhibition includes also the set used in the film.

Elokuvassaan Lapsenhoitaja, vuohi, lapsi ja kissanpentu amerikkalainen kuvataiteilija Emily Newman tarkastelee perhearjen psyykkisiä implikaatioita nukkejen avulla. Elokuvan lapsi kasvaa varhaisen kielenkehittymisvaiheen aikana kahden eri naisen hoidossa: häntä hoitavat sekä englanninkielinen äiti että venäjää puhuva lapsenhoitaja. Tämän johdosta lapsen äiti alkaa uskoa lapsen identiteetin jakautuneen. 20-minuuttinen elokuva kuvailee äidin, joka kuvittelee poikansa mielen tavoittamattomia osia ja pyrkii tutkimaan pojan identiteetin suljettuja osia. Kaksikielisyyden kehittyminen laukaisee eroprosessin äidin ja lapsen välille, mutta lopulta äiti löytää vaihtoehdon ja helpotuksen tilanteeseen.
Elokuva keskittyy äitiä esittävän nuken havaintoihin ja se on kuvattu kuvitteellisessa ympäristössä. Nyt esillä oleva elokuva tulee saamaan jatkoa osista, joissa tarkastellaan samaa tilannetta lapsenhoitajan ja lapsen näkökulmista sellaisina kuin äiti ne kuvittelee.
Näyttely sisältää myös elokuvan lavasteen.
